Update #7 / July 20, 2021
I have to admit that it almost looks like we are cursed. I can’t have another explanation for the obstacles we hit on our quest.
Snow in late May
Everything was planned for our May event when I went for a routine scouting trip to Lurë to find almost 2 meters of snow on the road leading to the lakes. I tried a few alternative routes but all were by snow or landslides.
Postponing the event was not possible due to the fact that the window for planting trees was just about to end. We went to Lurë anyway but unfortunately not with the trees but with friends to enjoy and do more scouting on the areas we will plant.
We have also met with Mr. Astrit Lika who is the current director of the National park to discuss our plans and how they can get involved.
Paperwork
While we have not been able to plant in May we switched immediately towards Autumn and used most of the Spring to prepare a detailed project, overall plan and a map to make sure we plant in Autumn.
You can check the Project Map where we marked potential and current planting areas.
We have worked on a comprehensive project for our planting efforts which we have submitted to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment for approval.
What’s next?
As soon as the Ministry will give us their decision we will be back to Lurë working towards the Autumn goals.
During summer we have a lot of work to do to prepare the planting area around the Liqeni i Zi.
This involves marking the area and the planting scheme. Cleaning up old wood and most importantly preparing the tree bed for 2 500 trees - in other words - dig 2 500 holes each 40x40x40 cm in size.
We want to do all this hard work ahead of Autumn events so that we can focus only on planting the trees and invite a wide range of volunteers to participate.
On behalf of the whole team,
Pavel
